Why does it cost more to fly to Denver than Salt Lake City when the plane makes a stop in Denver anyway?

I find this to be the case sometimes with airfare. You fly to City A, which makes a stopover in City B, but yet, it's cheaper than taking that same exact flight to City B. This makes absolutely NO sense to me.
