6 month old with a cold : /?

My 6 month old son started having a acute cough a few days ago that has become a deep congested cough. i've called the doctor n they've said to use a vaporizor and some baby vicks but it doesnt seem to be helping, he doesnt have a fever, he just has a lot of drainage. does anyone have any home remedies or advice?
